Designing the online experience for a new and innovative electric car brand


The brief was to design a new website for NIO, a new automotive start-up leading the way in electronic and automated vehicles. My role was to facilitate the design of the UI along side the broader team at Sennep. After receiving the thorough and well executed brand guidelines from forpeople, the challenge was to align with the launch of the site with the event launch of the NIO brand and the EP9 - the world fastest electronic car.

We started with a simple framework, wireframing layouts out each of the key sections of the site including an about page, a racing page, a page dedicated to the supercar and new jobs listings. We then integrated content, brand colours and introduced animated iconography and UI details to bring the designs to life. Working with a team of developers we created working prototypes and animation references for client review at key stages.


The result was a slick, content rich website that effectively communicated the NIO brand to the world through bold typography, full-width imagery and interactive video. We produced a set of flexible page templates and supplied detailed design kits to ensure a smooth and seamless handover to the NIO developers. The result was a future-proof design for the NIO online presence, and a platform for additional content in years to come.
