Digital Growth

A project exploring energy efficiency monitoring in homes of the future.

About the project

Digital Growth is a concept that combines nature and technology to create a dynamically changing digital plant with the ability to grow in homes of the future and react uniquely to the user's actions. The growth rate, colour and shape of the plant would be directly linked to the efficiency and lifestyle of the residents in each home. It can therefore behave as a monitor of energy consumption by individuals or households at a time when minimising living costs will be essential.

The Result

The project explores how surface covering could be used in the future to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of work and home environments. In our future world, when truly wild places may cease to exist, Digital Growth could provide a viable alternative by giving homes a unique identity through the digital mimicry of nature. The project won the ‘Wally Olins Opportunity Award’ for innovation in sustainable design.
